A library for living well
Aumidhra exists because the wisdom that could help a person live with purpose is mostly locked in books that are hard to find, hard to read, sectarian, or behind a paywall—and because the internet's version of it is unsourced, sentimental, and untrue to the traditions it flatters.
The vision
Every human being, whatever their language, religion or none, should be able to open a page and find—clearly, beautifully and for free—what the deepest traditions of India and the world have said to the exact situation they are in tonight. Not a sermon; a library. Not a guru; ten of them, and the texts they read, and where they disagree.
The site begins with ten masters and the scriptures behind them. It is meant to grow: more saints, more texts, Tamil and other languages, recorded chanting released for anyone to use, a way for teachers to build their own paths through the material, and—when the rights-holders permit—fuller texts. The measure of success is not visitors but whether one person, one night, found the line they needed and was helped by it.
How we work
Sourced. Every quotation links to the page it came from, and we distinguish four kinds of provenance: verified against a primary source; reported by devotees (Neem Karoli Baba wrote nothing; every saying of his is a recollection, and we say so); traditional attributions we could not trace to a text; and teachings given in our own words where we could not verify the exact wording. We would rather show you a gap than fill it with a fabrication.
Honest about disagreement. The Gita says the self is unborn and undying. The Dhammapada says all things are without self. These are not the same claim dressed differently, and a library that told you otherwise would be lying to you. Where the traditions genuinely differ, we put the passages side by side and say so.
For everyone. No login, no advertising, no tracking, no fee, no sect. The site does not know who you are. What you keep is stored in your own browser. Original text here is offered under a Creative Commons licence so that it can be reused.
Respectful of rights. Most of the masters' words are owned by the institutions they founded. We reproduce only short, attributed excerpts, link to the official texts for the rest, host no copyrighted full texts or recordings, use only public-domain or Creative Commons photographs, and say plainly that we are not affiliated with any of them. If you hold rights in something on this site and object to its use, write to us and we will act at once.
What Aumidhra is not
It is not a substitute for a teacher, a community, a doctor or a friend. It does not teach initiatory practices. It does not claim that all religions are the same. And it is not finished: it is a beginning, offered in the spirit of the Mother's charter for Auroville—belonging to nobody in particular, and to humanity as a whole.
